THE Heywood Golf Club will host one of their biggest events of the year next week with their annual Spring Tournament kicking off on Tuesday.
With five days of play scheduled the course will have plenty of golfers on display throughout the week.
The tournament begins with a two-person stableford aggregate event on Tuesday followed by a twilight round of nine holes on Thursday afternoon.
On Friday there is the 4BBB, then an 18-hole stroke on Saturday and a four-person gentsomes on Sunday to round out the busy week.
Club captain Matt McLeod said they have solid numbers so far and expect it to pick up over the coming days.
“Numbers are looking pretty good so far and they’ve been coming in steadily, we’re expecting them to build up over the week, but I think people are holding out a bit to see what the weather is doing,” he said.
With some rain forecast for this weekend the club will assess how the course holds up in order to get five days of play in next week.
“We had a few days without rain and some warm weather so hopefully that’s helped but we’re meeting with the greenskeeper and we’ll assess if we need to shift any days or anything like that,” McLeod said.
“It will depend a bit on the weekend, it looks like there is a bit of rain but hopefully that will pass us.”
Plenty of local players from Portland and Heywood are expected to compete across the five days.
The spring tournament is just the beginning of a big few weeks for the Heywood Golf Club with the organisation hosting a fundraiser for men’s mental health and suicide prevention in memory of member Jarrod Barclay.
The event will take place on Sunday December 4 with guest speakers from the Shaka Project attending with all funds raised to go towards the Black Dog Institute.
