THE Heywood Basketball Association women’s competition was headlined by a close match on Monday night in round five with Lightning earning a three-point win against a previously undefeated Spirit.
The 32-29 victory for Lightning came off an impressive performance from young player Laylarni Taylor-Lovett who recorded 14 points for the game, including two three-point shots.
Lightning was also aided by a strong performance from Jessica Lovett-Murray who dominated defensively and earned her side plenty of offensive opportunities.
It was the first loss for Spirit in the eight-round season.
Spirit had a spread of scorers on the night, but it wasn’t enough to shut down the run of Lightning.
Hayley Ball top scored for Spirit with eight points while Zoe Bannam and Jessica Valori both recorded six points.
• In the second match for the women’s competition Flyers gave a dominant performance to record a 61-33 victory against Stars.
Yakirah Agnew was the dominant scorer for Flyers hitting 21 points for the game while Stars had Kylie Harris hitting the scoreboard to finish with 16 points.
Bulls finish ahead of Bucks
In the senior men’s Wednesday night competition, Bulls earned an 11-point win against Bucks in round five, the closest recorded match of the night.
Sam Wilson hit the scoreboard early for Bulls, slotting four three-point shots to top score with 14 points, just ahead of teammate Dylan Jennings who contributed 13 points.
Troy Lovett, Jensen Moore and Jake Stevens were all solid contributors for Bucks but couldn’t close out the margin towards the end of the game.
• Lakers secured a huge win against Golden State, 50-19.
There was plenty of youth out on the court in the match up with Ryli Walker and Riley Fadersen getting the job done for Lakers, combining for a total of 23 points.
• It was another big margin in the third match with Celtix defeating Cavaliers, 68-27.
Celtix had three players contribute double digit scoring efforts with Evan Bott (22 points), Seth Harvey (20 points) and Leon Davis (18 points), making light work of the defensive set up of Cavaliers.
