Morrow takes women's bowls title

FAYE Morrow is the 2022 Casterton Bowling Club Women’s Champion, after holding off a massive comeback from Sandra Smolders in the weekend’s grand final.

Smolders started her semi-final run slowly, facing off against Leanne Richardson, who quickly wrapped up two ends before Smolders made a mark on the scoreboard.

Relatively new to bowls, Richardson had already secured a win in round two of the championship, overcoming Heather Rees and held her own against the seasoned Smolders, leading into the 10th end before Smolders found her form, taking four shots, then another two, to hold a five-shot lead.

Richardson wasn’t to be deterred, winning five of the next six ends, including an impressive four-shots-up on the 18th.

The experienced Smolders was not rattled though, picking up two and then three on the final ends, to take the match, 22 to 16.

In the grand final, Smolders again struggled to get a start, winning just five of the first 14 ends with a single shot in each, while Morrow’s consistent line and length with the bowl saw her cruise to an 11-shot and seemingly unassailable lead.

Refusing to go down without a fight, Smolders set about a ‘slow and steady wins the race’ game and on the 25th end, had dragged Morrow’s lead back to just two shots.

But despite winning 10 of the last 16 ends, including two cracking ‘four-ups’, Smolders was no match for the ‘slower and steadier’ Morrow and the huge lead she had secured in the first half of the match, Morrow taking the final end by one shot and the championship.
