Longhurst and Mibus shine at regional competition

JESSICA Mibus and Indi Longhurst are celebrating another successful trip to regional athletics carnivals, with a gold medal, three silver, a bronze and five fourth and fifth places between them, at the weekend.

Casterton Little Athletics belongs to the Western Country Region group, stretching from Swan Hill to the southern Victorian coast and the South Australian border to Colac, at its most-eastern point.

More than 300 athletes from the 18 centres within the region, headed to Ballarat’s Llanberis Athletics Track at the weekend.

Mibus and Longhurst both made the most of their trip to regionals, entering the maximum five events permitted over the two-day carnival, while Casterton centre president, Geoff Black, joined the pair in Ballarat, officiating as a starter for the track events.

Competing in the Under 15 girls, Mibus lined up against 13 athletes from across the region, her 20.06-metre effort in the discus earning her the gold medal and a berth at the state championships.

She also placed fourth in her age group in the long jump and triple jump and fifth in the 100 metres and 90-metre hurdles.

Longhurst took home a swag of silver from the meet, placing second in the Under 16 girls 100, 200 and 400 metres finals.

Off the track, the talented athlete also picked up bronze in the triple jump and fourth place in the long jump.

“Congratulations to both girls on an outstanding weekend,” Casterton president, Black said.

“We’re extremely proud of their efforts and wish them all the best at the next level.”
