KYEEMA Kangaroos are gearing up for another Tri State Games in the coming months as well as preparing to host the event in 2024 and 2025.
The Tri State Games is hosted annually and brings together people with a disability for a week of sporting competition.
Portland-based team Kyeema Kangaroos have been holding a series of training session across the past month in the lead up to the games in Cobram-Barooga to be held across November 12 to November 17.
Kyeema Support Services team leader Shannon Foley said the games have a lot on offer each year.
“The Tri State Games are an athletic event run over five days for people with disability,” she said.
“Athletes compete in indoor sports, aquatics, track and field events and group events.
“Kyeema is really excited to bring these games to Portland as the Kyeema Kangaroos team has been attending the games since 2016. It is a joyful and rewarding event to be part of.”
Kyeema is also in full swing of preparations to host the Games in both 2024 and 2025 with plenty of planning to be done across the next few months.
“Preparations have now started for the 2024 and 2025 Tri State Games in Portland,” she said.
“We are expecting 300 plus athletes and support staff to come to Portland in November each of the two years we will be hosting.
“We look forward to working alongside our community representatives and local Council and during the two years of the games, utilizing the community venues Portland has to offer and the accessible parks, equipment the council has installed at various locations around Portland.”
One of the main facilities for the Games will be the new pavilion at Alexandra Park which has been built with accessibility at the forefront of its purposes.
“The new facility at Alexandra Park will be a great asset to the games and our planning; along with sporting events the games also host dinner discos for the athletes at night,” she said.
Ahead of the Games coming to town Kyeema has formed a committee to help organise the week-long event which is welcoming any community members to get involved.
“There is now a committee formed to help to plan and coordinate the games,” she said.
“We encourage anyone who would like to be involved in the preparation of the games to come along to a meeting or to let us know that you might be able to assist next year.
“We look forward to working with the community in bringing Tri State Games to Portland in 2024 and ’25.”
The next Tri State Games meeting will be held on September 20 at 50 Lalor Street.
