Maroons and McClure part ways

LESS than a month after winning the South West District Football Netball League senior premiership, Coleraine Football Netball Club and senior coach, Ryan McClure, have parted ways.

The club hierarchy met with McClure late last month with McClure confirming to The Spectator that the two parties had parted ways.

“I am not coaching next year, it was the club’s decision,” he said.

“They are going to need to find players, so they might be looking for a playing-coach.

“Whatever the club wanted, I would have done. The club has been good to me, I was happy to coach again though.

“My girls loved it there with the netball side of it, we came down as a family, I have no issue with the club, but it could have been communicated a bit earlier.”

McClure said 2024 would be a new season and still believed he had something to offer the Maroons.

“It is probably going to be a bit of a rebuild year, as far as keeping the group together, I probably had something to offer them,” he said.

“But I played in three premierships as a player and with each of those, the coach wasn’t there the next year.

“I really loved my time there though, it is a great group of guys.”

Club president, Josh Eats said the club was looking to head in a different direction for 2024.

“We have got a couple of people in the pipeline, it was just a club decision at the end of the season (to part ways with McClure).

“It was a very exciting season and we appreciate Ryan’s time and energy.”

Eats mentioned the club’s preference during its search for a new coach would be a playing-coach.

McClure said he will assess his coaching options going forward but may still stay at the Maroons for family reasons.
