Local bowler earns Para Jackaroo squad selection

GRANGEBURN Bowling Club bowler, Alison East, continues to shine in her chosen sport after being selected as a member of the Bowls Australia 2024 Para Jackaroos squad with ambitions of playing in the Commonwealth Games and the World Games.

East has earnt her way into the squad via the Emerging Para Jackaroos squad over the last 12 months with a commitment to training and playing at the highest level available, and was the only member of the emerging squad to be selected in the full squad this year.

She has had to undertake much of her training on her own and then self-report to the Australian selectors with her performances and data input each week for the past 12 months, this data is screened by the selectors and the coaching staff to stay across the development of all athletes.

East is rightly proud of her success in the sport and her goals for the future are firmly set with an eye on the major international events.

“The last year has been hard work with all the training and events that I’ve had to partake in,” East said.

“I play pennant bowls on a Tuesday and a Saturday and the days when I don’t compete, I’m busy with training and the ‘homework’ set by the high-performance team.

“I practice every day, and I cannot wait to compete for the Jackaroos.”

East has just returned from the Australian Para Nationals held at the Warwick Bowling Club in Western Australia last month, where she reached the semi-finals in the singles competition after winning five tough preliminary rounds.

As the only Victorian in the Para Jackaroos squad, East refuses to rest on her laurels as she strives for even higher honours.
