Bunker shots

WITH 2023 coming to an end, the Hamilton Golf Club held its annual Christmas Ambrose event, a great field of 88 players took part, with handicap and non-handicap players having a go on Sunday.

There were some interesting pin positions and teeing off spots, which created a bit of fun on the day.

The winning team was Jason Chandler, Meg Chandler, Warren Hall and Bruce Luhrs with 55.25 nett, ahead of runners-up, Mal Groves, Graham Rentsch, Johann Rentsch and Paul Ryan 56 nett.

Third place went to Brendan Lang, Guy Sevior, Ben Taylor and John Manson 56.625, ahead of Michael Holcombe, Robyn Holcombe, Jo Forsyth and Kerryn Price 56.875 nett, and Rachel Slade, Gary Slade, Jeanette Carmichael and Pam White 57.25.

Nearest the pins went to Price and Tim Mason on the third, Marg King and Mason on the sixth, Sue Walter and Graham Rentsch on the 13th, along with Price and Warren Butcher on the 16th.

Nearest the string on the fifth went to Wendy Wathen and Peter McMahon, while longest putts on the 18th went to Carmichael and Andrew Lewis.

Saturday

A FIELD of 53 men and 19 women played in the stableford event with Phil Grant having the best score of the day with a very handy 41 points to win B grade from Andrew Bowman and Ian Taylor who both collected 38.

A grade was a very close affair with a three-way countback deciding the placings, as Troy Elliott took out first spot ahead of Chuck Raymond, with Mal Groves in third after they all scored 37 points.

Balls down the line went to Ross Murray, Ryan Sigley, Warren Butcher Stephen Giles 37, Luke Balkin, Alan Oakley, Kevin King, Rob Vecchiet and Zac Elliott all 36.

Nearest the pin on the third went to Zac, Raymond on the sixth, Ryan Sigley on the 13th, and the 16th was claimed by Troy.

The closest second shot on the ninth was struck by Butcher, with Balkin saluting on the 15th.

Rhonda Scullion had her short game down pat, finishing with a 40- point haul to win the women’s competition ahead of runner-up. Di Sevior, who held on in a three-way countback with 35 points.

Balls down the line went to Walter, Rita Walkom 35, Tania Cullinane 34, Pam White, Bev Tyson and Judy Thornton 33pts.

Rita Walkom was on target, claiming three of the four nearest the pin shots,

Walkom won the sixth, 13th and 16th, while Gerri Griffin got the third, and Walter took out second shot on the 15th.

Tuesday

THE Tuesday beginners and emerging golfers held their final round for the year, with 16 players participating in a social hit before a barbecue lunch and presentation of major awards for the year.

The best first year golfer was awarded to Jan Hornell, while the most consistent emerging golfer was awarded to Kerry Martin.

Tuesday golf will restart on January 9 and the new beginners and emerging program will commence on February 13.

Wednesday

A SMALLER field of 21 players played a stableford event and club stalwart, Ath Archer, continued to show age is no barrier when it comes to playing golf.

Archer finished with 40 points, which was 86 off the stick playing off a handicap of 16.

Runner-up was Cullinane with 38, with balls down the line going to Jen Pike 36, Bev Tyson, Di Raymond and Lyn O’Brien all finishing with 33.

Nearest the pin on the third went to Robyn Holcombe, Tyson on the 16th, and the longest putt on the 13th was won by Archer.

TODAY’S event is stableford for both men and women.
