Shipwreck Coast Swim Series comes to town

PORTLAND’S Nuns Beach will swarm with swimmers tomorrow as it plays host to the second leg of the annual Shipwreck Coast Swim Series.

The Portland leg is known as the David Tapscott Portland Memorial Open Swim Challenge in honour of dedicated Portland Surf Life Saving Club member.

The series kicked off last weekend in Port Fairy with a number of local swimmers attending the first instalment of the four-swim event.

The series includes races at Port Fairy, Portland, Warrnambool (Saturday January 27) and Port Cambell (Sunday February 4).

Each leg of the race includes a 1.2km section and a 500m section with swimmers able to participate in any or all of the locations.

Portland joined the swim in 2022 and has since seen numbers build across its first two years of involvement with Sunday’s race pushing to exceed previous entries.

The first wave of swimmers are expected to hit the water at 10am.

Locals have already tested the waters in the series with the Port Fairy leg on Saturday with Michelle Simons finishing third in her category for the long course while Liam Doyle came in fourth for his division.
