Clean sweep

PORTLAND Memorial Bowling Club had a day to remember on Saturday’s weekend pennant grand final day, with the club winning all four divisions of the competition in a remarkable feat.

The division one and two sides earned the additional satisfaction of defeating local rivals Portland Bowling Club, with division one taking out their match 62-53, while division two won 42-39, with both games playing out in Penshurst.

It was a near identical result in the division three match to the division two match, with Memorial getting over the line against Dartmoor 43-39, while division four got the best of Hamilton Gold, although the scores from that match were available at the time of print.

Division one Portland Memorial player Chris Fleming said this was a “massive” achievement which may well be unprecedented.

“I’m not sure if this has ever happened before, certainly the word around the place at the time was that this is the first time one club has taken out all four divisions,” Fleming said.

“Considering how much change the club has gone through, with us losing some key players and then going from three teams up to five teams, this is an amazing accomplishment, and there were certainly big celebrations afterward.”

Fleming said while the division one side went in to their match as the favourites, the same could not be said of the other sides, with all responding to a significant challenge thrown down by their opposition.

“Portland were amazing in that division one game, I don’t think the nine shot scoreline really reflected how close the game was,” Fleming said.

“Division two and three was probably a 50/50 game and division four went in as underdogs so it was incredible that all of them got across the line.”

Fleming emphasised that these victories come at a time where the club has gone through significant change both on the green and off it.

“We have a first-year president and a number of younger board members to go along with the older crew,” Fleming said.

“We’ve got our new greens being installed soon which should hopefully give the club a boost, but we don’t want to rest on our laurels, there’s a bright future ahead.

“I do believe the club is ticking all the right boxes, we’re going in a really progressive direction.”

The club will have more opportunities to secure silverware in today’s midweek pennant as they’ll go to battle in division one and division two.
