Bunker shots

THE men’s club championships are underway with the Open/A grade (0-9 handicap) field looking very close at the moment.

Liam Powell, Wayne Riddle and Stuart McAdam are equal leaders with 76 off the stick, with John Hill on 77 and Jason Chandler and Graham Rentsch on 78.

B grade (10-15 handicap) is being led by Stuart McAdam (who is also currently equal leader in the Open section) 76, while Chris Crane is sitting three shots back on 79, Eli Pitts and Chris Eales 84, with Michael Holcombe and Martin Pitts one shot further back on 85.

C grade (16-21 handicaps) is very close with Rob Vecchiet leading on 88 ahead of Phil Schultz 89, and Robbie Cunningham on 90.

In D grade (22-54 handicaps) Brendan Lang has a good lead with 94 from Alan Oakley 100 and Doug Ward 101.

The men will play their second round today, while some of the women will play their first round, as they have the option of playing on Saturdays or on Wednesdays for their championships.

Saturday

A FIELD of 65 men played in the stroke event and first round of the club championships.

Stuart McAdam had the round of the day, finishing with nett 66 to take out A grade from Liam Powell 70 nett.

B grade was won by Chris Crane, who also had a fabulous round finishing with 67 nett to win from Brendan Lang on 72 on a countback.

Danny Franc took out C grade with a 71 nett from Graeme Trounce 76 nett.

Balls down the line went to Rob Vecchiett 72, Phil Schultz, Robbie Cunningham, Graham Rentsch and Rob Stagoll all 73 nett, Stephen Astbury, Jason Chandler, Wayne Riddle, Tyler Hards 74 nett and Michael Holcombe 75 nett.

Nearest the pin on the third hole went to Tyler Hards, Paul Ryan on the sixth, Jason McIntosh on the 13th, Stagoll on the 16th, while Holcombe hit the closest second shot on the ninth and Kelso saluted on the 15th.

Margie Hadley topped the women’s rankes with 36 points from runner-up, Deb Pinniger, who claimed second on a countback with 35 points.

Balls down the line went to Helen Williams, Tania Cullinane and Cheryl Brinkmann 35pts, Debbie Milne and Rhonda Scullion 34, and Jane Bunge, Di Hatherell and Di Raymond 33.

Nearest the pin and the superpin on the third was won by Tania Cullinane, Carolyn Lewis was closest on the sixth, Molly O’Brien on the 13th, and Bev Tyson on the 16th.

The closest second shot on the ninth went to Jane Bunge and the 15th was won by Di Raymond.

Wednesday

THIRTY-NINE women braved the hot and windy conditions on Wednesday to play in a par event for the second round of the Spectator Trophy.

Ath Archer has continued on from last week with another great score, taking out A grade with +1 on a three-way countback, with Lyn Satchell runner-up and Glen Dixon just missing out and heading up the ball run down.

B grade was won by Sally Warburton +1 from Judy Pekin who finished square.

Balls down the line went to Dixon +1, Alma Fonda square, Eileen Robertson -1, Cheryl Brinkmann, Nettie Purvis, Di Raymond, Helen Holcombe, Robyn Holcombe and Enid Smith all -2.

Nearest the pin on the third was won by Brinkmann, Milne on the sixth, and Dixon on the 16th, while the closest second shot on 15th was won by Tyson, while Fonda had the longest putt on 13th.

Tuesday

THE nine-hole competition played on a Tuesday was won by Lesley Toyer, with Kath Hartwich runner-up. 

Visting professional Craig Davis is continuing his lessons with the new and emerging golfers.

Upcoming events

TODAY is stroke for both the men and women with the second round of the men’s club championships, commencement of the first round of women’s championships for players who have elected to play on Saturday, and also a round of the Kavell Lyons Cup for the women.

Hit them long and straight and enjoy the 19th hole.
