Invitational in Hamilton excites local gymnasts

THE Hamilton and District Gymnastics Club is gearing up for its biggest event of the year, with the annual invitational event going ahead tomorrow.

The event, at the club’s facility on Mount Baimbridge Road, will attract around more than 100 young gymnasts from the Natimuk, Warrnambool, Stawell, Portland, Blue Lakes and Millicent clubs.

The club’s head coach, Alyssa Thompson said the club was raring to go for another big event in Hamilton.

“We are really excited, I think there is about 130 kids enrolled, so it is going to be big,” she said.

“We will be using the Floor, beam, bars and vault across each of the three levels.

“We have been practicing all our routines the last few weeks, we have already had two comps this year and the girls are excited to do it on their own equipment.

“The last couple of comps in Ballarat and Warrnambool has seen good results from the girls.”

The vaults and beam are expected to be the strongest apparatus for the locals, with five Level 1 gymnasts, seven Level 2 and four Level 3 competitors representing Hamilton across the day.

Thompson said a lot of work had gone into getting the event to this stage, with action getting underway just before 9am and running through until about 5pm.

“There has been a lot of planning involved, we have had quite a few meetings, it has been a long time coming,” she said.

“Saturday night will be a relief, but it has been really exciting in the build-up.”
