River rewards for local rowers in Dimboola

HAMILTON rowers contested the 134th staging of the Dimboola Rowing Regatta last weekend, as crowds lined the banks of the Wimmera river to view 212 athletes from 20 clubs competing in 71 events.

The Hamilton and Alexandra College (THAC) students continued their successful start to the season with an early heat win ahead of Melbourne Rowing Club.

The THAC crew of Henry Russell, Ben Walker, Hugo Dabernig, Harry Dorahy and Cox Jake Alexander returned to the start for the final to face Melbourne Argonauts, stroked by Jacob Stringer.

The seasoned competitors gave the gathered crowds an exciting race with THAC taking the win by a foot.

THAC continued its winning success with the Female Under-17 Single Scull a combination event with the Under-15 Single Scull.

Year 9 student, Molly Walker, faced fellow student, Phoebe Baker, and Under-15 sculler, Drew Vagg, from Wentworth in the first and final event.

Walker took the lead early in lane three, drawing the lead head of the first river bend.

Drawing on the lead, Walker finished six lengths clear of her competitors to claim the medal.

Hamilton Rowing Club continued the Hamilton success with their Female C Grade Quad Scull of Charlotte Young, Debbie Millard, Pippi Mellington, Jacinta Williams and Cox Pip Mecham.

Drawing a tough heat against Yarra Yarra and Richmond, Hamilton’s combination of masters and school rowers proved a winning success flying into the afternoon’s final against Heat 1 winner, Richmond Rowing Club.

 Urged on by Mecham, the Hamilton crew drew an early lead, building as they came into spectator view to win with an easy length ahead of their competitors.

Further success with Eliza Millard and Williams combining as the winning Female B Grade Double combination.

Debbie Millard combined with Alan Clarence in the Mixed Double Division 1 for further success over Richmond Rowing Club.

Clarence, Mellington, Young and Stephen Hrast combined for further success in the Mixed Quad Scull Division 3 against a strong combination from Mildura/Wentworth and Richmond Rowing Clubs.

With Eliza Millard’s lengthy course history, she steered the quad combination down a straight course for the win.

On Sunday's Head of the Wimmera time trial event held over 6.2km, Hamilton had further success with Debbie Millard, Hrast, Clarence, Williams coxed by Eliza Millard completing the river race in a time of 26 minutes and 41 seconds to secure the medals for the Mixed Masters Coxed Quad Scull event.

 THAC are set for a busy race day today at Lake Wendouree, while Hamilton will be all hands on deck to host next weekend’s mini Western Victoria event, hosting clubs from Warrnambool, Horsham and Dimboola.

Racing will start at 9am.
