Brown shooting for national title

HARRY Brown is set for the national stage after qualifying for the Victorian team after winning the Victorian Clay Target Association state titles at Echuca last week.

The 17-year-old has qualified for the national titles, and will captain the Victorian junior team in his final underage appearance.

Brown told The Spectator that he was excited to perform well during high-pressure events.

“I went pretty good, the first couple days I won the first two events for juniors, then shot another three or four and the score was good enough to get the high gun,” he said.

“I placed in the top six juniors to go into the teams shoot and I shot off and got first position in the three-person junior Victorian team.

“I have qualified to go to nationals over in Perth for the Victorian juniors, this will be my last year as a junior for the states, my last big shoot as a junior will be the nationals in April.”

The four-day event offered mostly good conditions, with Brown up against more than 20 other juniors.

“Thursday we shot a champion to champions 75 event, and I wont that for the juniors, I got into a shoot-off, then same for the double rise and won that shoot off as well,” he said.

“I (got a sash for) overall high gun for the four days, then the other sash was for the team shoot, I shot the best out of the six juniors.”

The Konongwootong resident is also a member of the South West Academy of Sport, training under coach, Gary Hayden.

“Gary has done a lot with me, I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am without him,” he said.

“Most weekends from now I will be going to bigger shoots now, then at the start of February the South Australian state titles are on, so will probably end up over there with some training with Gary inbetween.
