Shawnee capitalises to claim victory

ACCURACY from the two-point range pushed Shawnee across the line on Sunday in the Portland Basketball Association’s division one women’s grand final against Celtix Green.

The 48-42 victory came down to a dominant first half from Shawnee with their accuracy inside the arc a key to their quick offensive play.

An early first half surge saw Shawnee capitalise on fast breaks and quick offensive rotation with accurate shooting allowing them an early lead.

Shawnee’s defensive pressure kept Celtix scoreless early in the match and shut down any offensive rhythm.

Meg Schultz, Heidi Jones and Lexie Petch provided plenty of run for Shawnee down court to set them up with a confident lead.

Celtix built into their offensive play but couldn’t find their touch in the first half, giving Shawnee a chance to dominate rebounding opportunities.

By half time Shawnee pushed out to 30-6 lead forcing Celtix to produce something big in the second half to get back into the game.

After the half time break both sides went goal-for-goal early with Shawnee building on their first-half momentum to continue finding scoring opportunities.

Celtix started to lift with their finish in offence building, led by the hand of Lexie Purcell who turned it on at the three-point line to slot five in the second half.

Some hard-fought defensive efforts from Millie Jennings and Kayla Pickert allowed Celtix to get back into the game with their pressure combining with Purcell’s offensive efficiency to close in on the margin.

The lift from Celtix pushed them within eight points of Shawnee, but the premiers managed to stay in touch off the hand of Schultz to finish off the game six points ahead.

The offensive efforts from Schultz saw her top score for the winners and earned her the Most Valuable Player award for the match, which was celebrated alongside a season MVP award.
