Coasters impress in Hamilton

PORTLAND Coasters junior basketballers had their first tournament of the 2023-24 representative season in Hamilton on last weekend with three teams winning the grand final.

The under-18 girls claimed their first medal of the season off the back of an undefeated run throughout the tournament which culminated in a grand final win against Ballarat-based team Phoenix Basketball Club, 32-24.

It was an impressive all-around performance from the side who had different contributors hitting the scoreboard each game, with Millie Ferguson stepping up in the grand final clash to top score.

The under-14 boys showed plenty of improvement across their two days of play to beat Hamilton in the grand final, 30-27, after losing to the same side by 26 points in their pool match.

The side had some convincing wins during the rounds against Warrnambool and Horsham despite a close first game against Port Fairy where the Coasters got over the line by four points.

A grand final victory was also claimed by the under-18 boys division two side who managed to move through the tournament undefeated.

There were some close match ups for the side with two of their regular round games being decided by five points or less.

In the final match up against Maryborough, Portland managed to put in a dominant performance to claim the win, 45-35.

Another impressive performance was put in by the under-18 boys division one side who made the grand final but fell short against a tough Warrnambool outfit, 42-36.
