PORTLAND Basketball Association hosted the first half of its Junior South West Classic tournament on the weekend, with under-16 and under-18 boys and girls sides from across the region coming to town to contest the tournament.
Portland found success in the under-18 boys division one, as the team came away with a four-point victory on Sunday over Mount Gambier in the grand final.
11 points each to Klay Nicholls and Chad Finck ensured the team got over the line.
• For the under-18 girls, it was Mount Gambier who got the best of Portland in the grand final 55-39, as while the Coasters shared the scoring load around, they weren’t able to match the Lakers’ pace.
• Portland’s division two boys missed out on a grand final berth after finishing second in their pool with a 3-1 record, with their loss to Mount Gambier ruling them out.
• The under-16 girls finished with a 2-2 record, with their strongest performance being a 35-17 win over Warrnambool.
• It was a similar story for the division one boys who came third in their grade, also going 2-2 including a close 38-36 win over Mount Gambier.
• The under-16 division two side struggled the most out of the Portland teams, unable to get over the line in any of their four matches.
Tournament continues
The South West Classic will continue this weekend with the under-14s and under-12s boys and girls to be in action in Portland tomorrow and Sunday.
Six Portland sides will take the court all up, with one each in the under-12s boys and girls divisions, and two each in the under-14s.
