THE Hamilton Basketball Association (HBA) is on the cusp of going into Basketball Victoria administration after it failed to fill three director roles at last week’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).
There is a second AGM on Thursday, with a Basketball Victoria representative at the meeting, as the association looks to fill its one-year president role, along with two-year vice-president and secretary roles.
No nominations were received for either of the three roles, forcing the meeting to be adjourned and will be re-convened at 6.30pm Thursday.
The association released a statement on Facebook last week with an update.
“It is critical that our members understand that the Director positions must be filled for the HBA association to continue,” the statement read.
“If these positions aren’t filled, this will result in the dissolution of the HBA Board and the Hamilton Basketball Association.
“If the Board is moved into dissolution, the association will cease to operate.
“Domestic, Squad and CBL seasons will also cease operation.”
Expressions of interest for board positions remain open ahead of the meeting, with the association hopeful of getting nominations lodged before Thursday night.
Acting president, Dean Le Roy, took over after Kira Ryan stepped down from the role in May, and told The Spectator that he remained hopeful of filling the roles.
“My feeling is we will go into the meeting without nominations, but that we will go fill the roles by the end of the meeting,” he said.
“The current board has gone above and beyond, we lost Kira when she stepped away, a secretary has been doing light duties after having a baby earlier in the year.
“The current board has well and truly stepped up since, the ones who have finished their roles are ready to step away and let others step up
“We have got 1500 paying members, and we are looking for three to fill the director roles, it is a very small number we’re asking for, compared to the number of people linked to the association.”
The HBA is being guided through the process by Basketball Victoria, with a representative set to be at the meeting on Thursday.
“I haven’t been around it long enough to know what is normal and what isn’t, working closely with Bec from Basketball Victoria, she will come down and run our second AGM,” Le Roy said.
“At the end of the next AGM, if the roles are filled, the association will be handed over to Basketball Victoria.
“Bec said they had never got to that point before, but they would then take over and current board relieved of our duties.
“Basketball Victoria would control the competition, but all competitions get stopped, then Basketball Victoria have a duty of care to try and find a board – goes to a town hall type meeting.
“They have a certain amont of time to fill those roles, otherwise the association debts are paid and the association is closed.”
Thursday’s meeting is at Alexandra House with nominations able to be emailed in ahead of the meeting.
“Just rock up, but ideally we would like to have nominations before we go into the meeting so we know what we are getting into,” Le Roy said.
Nominations can be forwarded via email to hba3300secretary@gmail.com.
