HAMILTON boxer, Imogen McDonnell, is in Singapore and will make her international debut today.
The 26-year-old left on Thursday and spent Friday acclimatising before getting into the ring today for her first bout before backing it up with another bout tomorrow.
McDonnell is representing Team Victoria in the same event that Mocka’s Boxing Club teammate, Katie Riddle, competed in last year.
The local said she was excited for the opportunity and had worked hard to prepare for the trip.
“I love it, I am always excited for any matchup and any bout,” she said.
“I always have chats with Katie, a few other girls on the Vic team on the same trip have been kind enough to reach out as well.”
McDonnell has had a busy past few months, sparring and boxing regularly, and goes into the weekend in strong shape.
“The body is feeling good, I have had a really active past few months, three fights in six weeks,” she said.
“I am feeling very fit, I thought I would have flattened off by now, but I got some PBs last week, so that is positive.”
The Hamilton resident said she had done some study on one of her opponents in the lead-up to the weekend as well ahead of her 66kg bouts.
“I have done a bit of research on one of the girls,” McDonnell said.
“I am expecting her to be a big strong stand-up fighter, and I don’t know anything about the other girl.
“If she is fighting on day one, I will definitely check her out.”
Adding to the occasion is the trip is McDonnell’s first overseas trip, with the stars aligning with work to allow her to represent Victoria.
The team will be made up of Boxing Victoria coaches, with the 26-year-old full of confidence.
“I am just trying to get as many fights as possible, new faces in front of me and learning to adapt to what is in front of me on the day,” McDonnell said.
“I have been really appreciating having three new opponents this year, and these two new opponents will be the same,
“I am looking to get that extra experience, and I think these two are beatable.”
The state titles are also on McDonnell’s radar later in the year and will use this as preparation.
“I am never looking past these fights, but I have the state titles in September,” she said.
“So it will be about seven weeks out when I get home, and there is the Golden Gloves in Brisbane two weeks before nationals and I would love to go to that as well.
“State titles is the biggest priority for me though.”
McDonnell also thanked the community for their donations to help make the Singapore trip possible.
It starts a busy period for Mocka’s Boxing Club, with other club members getting in the ring in Melbourne next weekend.
