PORTLAND cricketer Macey Williamson has helped her Geelong side to secure a grand final victory in the under-15 female Marg Jennings Cup on Thursday last week, with her side beating Prahran by 59 runs.
The Marg Jennings Cup brings together teams from across the Greater Melbourne and Geelong area and includes prestigious clubs such as the Melbourne Cricket Club and Carlton Cricket Club, with Williamson’s Geelong going undefeated through the entire competition to claim a spot in the grand final, which they eventually won.
Williamson had a role to play in the final, batting at number eight and adding eight runs to her side’s total of 9-163.
She was also able to affect a run out in Prahran’s innings, while also being called on to bowl, as Prahran were all out for 104 after 29.5 overs.
While Williamson was more than in the game in the final, it wasn’t her most auspicious performance of the tournament, with her 25 runs at the top of the order in their win over Essendon Maribyrnong Park probably being the highlight.
“This was my first time ever being part of a winning side, so it was a pretty cool experience,” she said.
“The entire couple of weeks was pretty awesome, obviously I was playing alongside and against some really talented players so there was always something happening in the game.
“The game could change at any moment, and you always needed to be ready to help in some way.
“There was 13 of us so some games you would get rested and just field, but even then, you were always in the game.
“For me it was just a case of waiting on my chances and making the most of them.”
In addition to it being a chance to play some high-level cricket, Williamson said she was fortunate to play alongside a good bunch of girls.
“We had a lot of fun, it was good being out there and I just really enjoyed the whole experience,” she said.
“I need to say a big thank you to mum (Cara) for taking me down to Melbourne, it was a huge commitment, and she really doesn’t like driving in the city.
“And to all the coaches that were there throughout the week, I felt like I learned a lot from the experience, and it was great to come away with the win.”
Williamson said her focus will now turn to the remainder of the under-16 Portland and District Cricket Association season, as she hopes to lead Portland Colts to a finals berth.
