Rebels girls dominate in round one

THE Greater Western Victoria (GWV) Rebels Girls team started the year in convincing fashion on Saturday, claiming a 59-point win against Gippsland Power and keeping them goalless.

Despite many of the stats being quite similar between the two teams, the Rebels flexed their scoring power on the opposition, continuing to hit the scoreboard throughout the game with the final score blowing out to 9.7 (61) to 0.2 (2).

The Futures Squad also picked up a great win in the curtain raiser in a successful day for the club.

Rebels coach, David Loader, was impressed with the way the girls performed and attributed it to their strong pre-season work.

“They were unbelievable the girls, to win like that and keep the opposition scoreless, we were so impressed with how we went about it,” he said.

“The girls who had done the work, that’s most of the girls played well, thanks to plenty of hard work in the pre-season.”

The spread of the team was something that separated the Rebels from the opposition with players all over the ground able to contribute with skipper, Lilli Condon leading from the front.

Brilliance around the stoppage and in the midfield helped to get the ball moving their way and build momentum.

“We were just way more even than the opposition … we were dominant in the ruck, Kalani (Scoullar) had nearly 30 hitouts and Laila had nine, getting first use at the stoppage helped us,” Loader said.

Hamilton’s Jess Rentsch had a large impact on the game with her tackling pressure a key factor in the big win, recording a game-high eight tackles, to go with her eight disposals and three inside 50s.

Starting in the midfield, she set the tone before moving to a half-forward flank and attempting to score on her defender.

“She plays with such great intent, I love the way she goes about it, she’s going to have a very bright future, she is such a worker and has great leg speed,” Loader said.

Jedah Huf was strong off the back line with lack of opportunity due to the dominance of the Rebels midfield getting the ball moving towards goal.

While she didn’t get heaps of the ball, Huf made up for that with her pressure and leadership qualities organising the structure of the back six.

“She played centre half-back on the weekend, her direct opponent didn’t have a big influence, sometimes it can be limited, it wasn’t like the ball spent a lot of time in their forward 50,” Loader said.

Despite the scoreboard, Rentsch felt the game was much closer and was of great standard compared to what the girls were accustomed to.

“It was a good win (and) if you weren’t looking at the scoreboard, you would’ve thought it was pretty close just because of the intensity, pressure and competition,” she said.

“I think the team was really good and the girls understood where they needed to be … (we) were able to have good passages of play.

“It is a big step up but when you get to a higher level, it pushes you to lift as well and the level that the NAB League is, I am loving.”

Huf said it was great to sing the new song for the first time and start the season off with a confidence-boosting win.

“It was great to start off the season with such a convincing win and get our confidence up … the game was a bit of a step-up intensity wise because we don’t train at full intensity,” she said.

“I also feel that the game felt a lot closer than the scoreboard reflected, we just managed to kick the goals.

“I wasn’t real happy with my game playing at half-back, I felt like I wasn’t really making an impact on the game … (but) I’m really wanting to get selected in the team again next week so I can show them a bit more of what I think I can do.”
