WESTERNS Football Club received a boost to their senior team’s stocks over the past month, with Kingston Narborlhborlh and Luke Nagurrgurrba travelling from the Northern Territory to play in three games with the team.
The two men hail from a small community near Jabiru, which is roughly 250km east of Darwin, and were contacted through their cousin, local man Frank Makin.
Makin said the idea to bring them in was something he “just threw out there” in a discussion with the club’s senior football coach Winis Imbi.
“I didn’t think it was going to happen honestly… it’s a bit out of the ordinary,” he said.
“Winis said he would talk to the club about it, and it was only a couple days later that we got the blessing, and it went from there.
“It was a really big step for them, they’ve never really travelled far before they came here, never been on a plane before or anything.
“I think it was great for the club as well, not just in terms of on-field success but also as a cultural experience.”
Narborlhborlh said they both really enjoyed their time in Portland and playing with Westerns, and said their hope is to be back next season for a much longer stint.
“I really enjoyed playing down here… (we) appreciate everyone (at Westerns) for having us be a part of the club,” he said.
“I’ll be back next year to play the whole season.”
Both players were strong contributors on field with Narborlhborlh kicking four goals across his three games and both players earning a mention in the best.
