THE Hamilton Kangaroos will go into the 2024 Hampden Football Netball League with two co-captains after the club announced Taine Morris and Darcy Russell would share the senior football captaincy this year.
The club announced the senior leadership group in January, with Brady Hicks handing over the captaincy ahead of the 2024 campaign.
Hicks played a role in the process of picking the new captain, with 2024 set to be the club’s first campaign under co-captains.
Morris told The Spectator it was something that would help develop him as a footballer.
“It is pretty exciting,” he said.
“We will get a lot of help from others as well, so it will be good.
“It will be a challenge (for me), but I am looking forward to it, I was trying to go for it, but it came down to the leadership group.”
Russell has spent the past few years as the big target up forward and said it was exciting to take on the leadership role.
“It is an honour, getting it passed down from Brady,” he said.
“Thommo is working on some really good things, so we just have to stick with it.
“Brad has been around footy for a long time, so it will be good to learn off him.”
Kangaroos senior coach, Brad Thomas said he was excited to see what the pair can do with the group this year.
“They will drive each other and they can both drive standards, so I think it is great,” he said.
“Taine is ready for it, with a new family and Darcy is a natural leader as well.”
Rory Gill was named vice-captain for the 2024 season, with the Roos’ pre-season ramping up with a practice game last night ahead of round one on April 6.
