HEYWOOD’S Jensen Moore doubled up at the Greater South West Junior Football League’s presentation afternoon on Sunday, taking out the under-14s best and fairest and MVP honours for the 2023 season.
Moore has had an unbelievable season of football, between captaining the Lions to the premiership and being named best on ground in the grand final, to also winning Portland’s best and fairest for the under-14s Hampden side, as well as Heywood’s club best and fairest.
He said while he thought he had a “pretty good” individual season the awards came as a bit of a surprise after claiming the ultimate prize in a thrilling premiership win against Heathmere, where Heywood claimed a 4.12 (36) to 5.5 (35) victory.
“We had a great season going undefeated and winning the premiership,” he said.
“It was a really stressful game, winning it by a point… we couldn’t kick straight really but we got there in the end.”
Moore gave thanks to the rest of his teammates and the club over at Heywood for helping him to reach his potential, while also crediting runner-up Artie Harvey from Heathmere for the challenge he and his side served up.
“We had some great battles this season, and some really close ones which were decided with less than 30 seconds to go,” Moore said.
“(Artie) had a really good season.”
As for the future, Moore said he’ll be ready for the next step of moving up into the under-17s age bracket.
“It’ll be a new challenge, but I’m excited for it, I think the success of this season will prepare me well.”
Harvey also had an exceptional season, polling votes in the same number of games as Moore, only falling short of a tie due to one fewer best on ground effort.
Miller takes out under-17s
Cavendish’s Josh Miller has taken out league honours in the G-League’s oldest age bracket, dominating the vote count to finish up with 25 votes, a full 12 ahead of second-place.
The Bloods were able to reach the top of the mountain in this age bracket, with Miller also named best on ground in the grand final.
“We were chasing the flag at the start of the season… after winning the grand final everything else is just a bonus I suppose,” Miller said.
“I’m proud of what I’ve been able to achieve on an individual level as well.”
Miller said there was an element of relief which went into the victory last Saturday, as he had experienced the pain of falling short despite being the favourites.
“I played for (Hamilton) Kangaroos in the Hampden league and we went out in straight sets one year despite being the top side, it’s not a great feeling,” he said.
“I kind of had that in my mind going into it… finals footy is a different game and Heathmere brought a good challenge.”
Jadyn Walter of Coleraine came runner-up in the best and fairest, finishing up with 13 votes, to go along with claiming the MVP award for the season.
