THE Hamilton Kangaroos will return home to Melville Oval for a round 17 clash against Camperdown.
In netball, as the HFNL home and away competition winds down, the season begins to change where Magpies swoop the unwary and so it is for the Hamilton Kangaroos Open team tomorrow when it hosts Camperdown.
The Kangaroos must be wary of the Magpies swooping in to take the game and the points tomorrow afternoon, as each team searches for winning form to wind up their 2022 home and away seasons.
The two teams last met back in round eight when the Kangaroos recorded a strong 14-point victory on the road, and the blue and white will be looking to display this form again tomorrow afternoon.
Both teams are in indifferent form of late with the Kangaroos having won once from their last four games, while the Magpies have posted two victories in the past month.
Camperdown has taken its game to the wire with Koroit and Warrnambool in the last two rounds, while Hamilton Kangaroos has been beaten by Cobden and South Warrnambool.
The game gives the home side the chance to look towards the future by trying different combinations on court with an eye to next season, but of course they want to end their season with a couple of victories.
With this game against Camperdown and then the last round against Port Fairy, the Kangaroos have the chance to showcase their talent at home for both games and reward their supporters with back-to-back victories to end their 2022 campaign.
In football, the Kangaroos will back themselves in to get a sixth win of the Hampden Football Netball League (HFNL) season when it hosts Camperdown at Melville Oval in a round 17 clash.
The last time the two teams met back in round eight, it was a thrilling contest with the blue and white taking home the win by just 11 points at the final siren after Darcy Russell slotted four majors.
Hamilton Kangaroos started the year off in fine form and despite losing three of its first four matches, it went on a three-game winning streak to sit at 5-4 after nine matches – the side hasn’t won a game since.
While finals were in the frame for a period of time, the home side has slipped to seventh spot and will be hoping to turn its recent form around.
Hamilton has lost its last seven games including some heartbreaking narrow games that could’ve easily seen the home team on the other side of the result - against Warrnambool (one point), Portland (seven points) and Terang-Mortlake (seven points).
Kangaroos coach, Hamish Waldron is looking forward to tomorrow's clash and hoped to finish the year off on a positive note.
“After the last game I sort of stirred the boys up a bit and said we’ve got two games to go and to finish the season strong,” Waldron said.
“(Last time we played them), it was sort of a game where we controlled the footy for most of it but couldn’t kick away from them.
“I said to the fellas on Tuesday night that’s something we’ve got to get into our game, to kick away from sides, but Camperdown were a side that didn’t go away all day.”
Camperdown full forward, Sam Gordon, has kicked 47 goals this season which included a haul of 13 against Port Fairy, and Waldron said nullifying his impact on the game would go a long way to winning.
“I put (the job) on Mick (McMeel) to play on Sam Gordon (last time) who is one of the best forwards in the competition,” he said.
“Last time I don’t think we kicked the straightest, if we can put a bit of scoreboard pressure on, that would be nice.
“Stoppage work has still been good, probably more to work on that last kick that goes inside the forward 50, we’ve been lacking with that a bit.”
Darcy Russell is coming off a four-goal haul and Waldron has labelled him as one to watch, as well as the strong contingent of young talent.
“Hamish Cook has been outstanding, the way he’s come up and shown he can play senior football, he’ll be a force in the future, Zach Burgess has played quite a few games and just keeps getting better, Ben Starkie has been going well too,” he said.
“Deacon White has come up and will play the last couple games, he was best for us last week and just his attitude and his attack on the footy has been great.
“They are the future of the club and the more games we can get into them and blood them, the better we will be in the future.
“We want to finish off strong and get up into sixth spot, get above Cobden … to get up into sixth spot or equal sixth will be the goal.”
Alex Clemens is unavailable for senior selection with Noah Herrmann coming into the side for his senior debut.
