Kangaroos rally for DV victims

THE Hamilton Kangaroos will acknowledge domestic violence victims with a special warm-up top and a minute’s silence today.

The Roos’ senior footballers and Open netballers will wear the one-off shirts for their warm-up ahead of their games against Portland, with the initiative coming after the club partnered with Rotary.

Dave Hintum said it was an important cause and had been something the club and Rotary had been working towards for a couple of months.

“The Rotary club approached us a while ago to help their campaign to shine a light on saying no to domestic violence, and we thought we could use this round to focus on that,” he said.

“Once I started talking to them, it is more prevalent than you realise.

“It is not just the extreme cases of people getting killed, it is more common than that; it is about coercive control and things like that.”

Today’s game is the first at Dunkeld Recreation Reserve, and Hintum is hoping for a strong crowd with the ground closer to Hamilton.

“We do know Portland has done stuff with their Rotary club in the past around this cause, so we thought it was a good match to do it,” Hintum said.

“The minute’s silence will be 1.30pm on the netball court and the senior footballers and Portland teams will join us for that.”
