Rams let finals opportunity slip

GLENTHOMPSON-DUNKELD has let its finals opportunity slip away against Woorndoo-Mortlake through poor kicking for goal, as the Tigers advanced to the Mininera and District Football League preliminary final with a 9.15 (69) – 5.12 (42) victory.

The inaccuracy started in the first quarter with the Rams posting 1.4 in reply to 3.3 from the Tigers, and the goal kicking didn’t improve.

By the end of the first half, Glenthompson-Dunkeld had 2.7 on the board and trailed by three goals, with the Tigers doing marginally better in front of the sticks.

With the teams returning to the field for the second half, the Rams needed to regain their kicking mojo, but it wasn’t to be, as the Tigers kept the opposition at arm’s length with a 23-point margin at the three-quarter time siren.

The last term was more of the same, as both teams wasted scoring opportunities with each team only kicking a single goal each for the quarter despite having multiple shots on goal.

Jezza Woods, Donald Collins, DJ Woods, Tyler Staude, Jamie Ferguson and Nathan Fall were the best afield for the Rams while Liam Cameron, Thomas Gough, Tyler Fowler, James Coghlan West, Simon Atkinson and Jack Spokes led the way for the Tigers.

TATYOON showed why it finished as minor premier with a seven-goal thrashing of Wickliffe-Lake Bolac in the qualifying final to book its place in the MDFL grand final in two weeks’ time, 14.14 (98) – 7.14 (56).

Being only three goals adrift of the Hawks at three-quarter time, the Magpies needed to come out for the last term looking to take the game to the opposition, but Tatyoon kept Wickliffe-Lake Bolac goalless in the final quarter to run away with the victory.

Other grades

DESPITE finishing third on the ladder, Lismore Derrinallum has booked a reserves grand final spot with a 40-point victory against minor premier, Ararat Eagles, 9.6 (60) – 2.8 (20).

WOORNDOO-Mortlake has kept its season alive with a 14.17 (101) – 5.6 (36) victory against SMW Rovers and will play Ararat in the preliminary final next Saturday.

PENHURST kept Glenthompson-Dunkeld scoreless in the second half to win through to the grand final, 11.8 (74) – 0.2 (2), as the Bombers look to record back-to-back Under-16.5 premierships.

HAWKESDALE-MACARTHUR has won through to the preliminary final from fourth spot after defeating third-placed Great Western, 10.9 (69) – 2.2 (14), and will now play Glenthompson-Dunkeld on Saturday.
