Bombers cap off stellar season

PENSHURST capped off its Mininera and District Football League (MDFL) Under 16.5 season with a thrilling seven-point win over Glenthompson-Dunkeld in Saturday’s grand final at Mininera Recreation Reserve.

After the Rams kicked the first goal of the game, the Bombers settled into their game plan to lead at quarter time by a goal.

The Rams stayed within touching distance of the Bombers leading into half time as they were the only team to kick a goal in the second quarter cutting the margin to only two points at the sound of the siren to signal the long break.

The third quarter was once again a very even contest and with the margin still at two points at the end of the term in favour of Penshurst, it set up an enthralling last quarter.

The last term was another tight tussle as neither side was able to pull away either on the ground or the scoreboard, but Penshurst was able to hold the Rams scoreless while adding five behinds and win 3.10 (28) – 3.3 (21)

Penshurst full forward Archie Page was judged best afield while Penshurst midfielder Oscar Hausler claimed the VCFL medal.

Whilst for the Rams, Alexander Prentice and Matthew Hutchings battled hard all day and were named Glenthompson-Dunkeld’s best players.

Penshurst coach Lachie Watt, said that he was nervous leading into the game even though his side had beaten the Rams three out of the four times they had played this year, but he knew the Rams could really match it with his side.

“It felt like on the day a few things went against us, we lost one of our key players very early and our older boys really stepped up and did really well,” he said.

“Craig Jackson stood tall and worked back behind the ball and took five or six intercept marks, and Oscar Hausler out of the middle really broke some lines and got it going our way as well.

“There has been a lot of hard work and we really wanted to be ready for this one as the last couple years we have had a more dominant team and really had to earn it this year.”

Seniors

TATYOON capped off an almost perfect year with a 14-point victory against an inaccurate Woorndoo/Mortlake on Saturday to claim the senior’s premiership.

The Hawks got a jump on the tigers early and lead by 24 points at the first break, which extended to 27 points at the long break.

After the break Tatyoon then extended the margin to six goals at three-quarter time and a big change from Woorndoo-Mortlake was needed.

The Tigers came out of the final break firing to kick three last quarter goals, but it wasn’t enough as they eventually went down to Tatyoon 10.2 (62) – 6.12 (48)

Anthony Rosato was presented with the VCFL medal and Andrew Browne took home the Stuart Knight Medal.

Haydn Templeton and Thomas Gough tried their best all day for Woorndoo Mortlake to be named their best players.

Reserves

Lismore Derrinallum came from third place to beat the top of the ladder Ararat to take out the reserve’s grand final on Saturday afternoon.

Lismore Derrinallum kicked two goals to none in the first quarter and this trend continued for the whole game as they kept Ararat goalless for the entire game.

The Demons piled on three goals in the second quarter to lead by five goals at the main break.

Lismore Derrinallum extended this gap to 55 points at three quarter time.

The Demons ended up winning the game 11.10 (76) – 0.3 (3) with Bradley Ward being awarded the medal for best on ground.

Riley Browne kicked four goals, whilst captain Matthew Bacon slotted three.
