Bunker shots

CLUB championships are well underway at Hamilton Golf Club, as the men have now completed two rounds and the A grade leader is Wayne Riddle.

Riddle sits on 152 and holds a two-shot lead ahead of Graham Rentsch 154, with Jason Chandler 157 and Liam Powell 160 rounding out the top four players.

B grade has Adam Manson holding onto a narrow lead with 170, one shot clear of John Andrews 171, with Marten Chin 174, Tim Lloyd and Kevin King 175 making up the other top spots.

Cameron McDonald is heading up C grade with 172, four shots clear of Shane Ryan 176, John Raymond 179 and Phil Schultz 180.

In D grade, Shannon Kearns has a handy four-shot lead on 189 from Phil Grant 193 and Glen Hards 197.

The men’s championship will conclude next weekend.

C and D grade play three rounds and finish next Saturday, while A and B grade play an extra round with the final round on March 20, aligning with the women’s final round.

If anyone is looking to see some good golf played, it will certainly be worth a visit to the course on the final day.

Last Saturday there were 65 men and 11 women who played a stroke event. 

Player of the day was John Raymond with a very good score of nett 66. 

The A grade winner was Jason Chandler with 72 nett, ahead of runner-up, Wayne Riddle, with 74 nett on a countback from Ben Kelson. 

Raymond topped the B grade scores, while Brent Bell was second with 72 nett and McDonald claimed third on a countback one shot further back.

C grade was won by Hamish Waldron 69 nett ahead of runner-up, Shannon Kearns, who recorded 74 nett.

Third went to Kynan Caruana with 75 nett.

Balls down the line went to Phil Schultz and Shane Ryan both 73 nett, Tim Lloyd 74 nett, John Andrews 75 nett, Mal Groves and Jamie Caruana 76 nett.

Saturday’s women’s stroke event was won by Helen Holcombe with 80 nett on a countback from Enid Smith, with Tania Cullinane finishing third on 81 nett.

Nearest the pins went to Michael Kelso on the third, Kelson on the sixth, Terry Dunn and Molly O’Brien on the 13th, and Bell and Smith on the 16th.

The closest second shot on the 15th went to Liam Powell.

Wednesday

WESNESDAY’S women’s event was the first round of their championships, monthly medal, putting and veteran events.

A field of 64 players, with Jo Brown having a day out, winning her first Monthly Medal on a countback from Alma Fonda with a 70 nett.

After the first of three rounds in the championships, the Open section is being headed by Sue Walter, who managed 78 off the stick to lead the field by eight shots from Kerryn Price 86, Alma Fonda 88, and Ath Archer and Molly O’Brien both on 89.

B grade has Jo Forsyth four shots clear with 92 from Pam White, Sue Vickery 96, and Deb Chambers 97.

C grade is a very close field with Gail Dimond and Elaine Rentsch both on 103, two shots ahead of Pam King 105, with Jenny Edwards, Carolyn Lewis and Sandra Colclough all on 106.

Results from the stroke event were - A grade winner Alma Fonda with 70 nett, ahead of runner-up, Sue Walter, with 72 nett.

Deb Chambers won B grade on a countback from Jo Forsyth after both scored 73 nett.

C grade honours went to Jo Brown with 70 nett from Gail Dimond 73 nett.

The nine-hole competition was won by Kath Hartwich with 19 points.

The putting was won by Chambers with 28 putts, who thanked Roger Lewis for a putting lesson the day before.

Nearest the pins went to Chambers on the third, Fonda on the sixth and Archer on the 16th.

Closest second shot on the 15th was won by O’Brien, while Lesley Hobbs collected the longest putt on the ninth and Walter holed the longest putt on the 13th.

Upcoming events

THE women have been playing a knockout matchplay event over the past month, and it is now down to the final two players.

Rita Walkom will play Venita Mibus in what should be a very close final.

This weekend there is a stableford competition today and also one on Monday for the public holiday; visitors are welcome.

Hit them long and straight and enjoy the 19th hole.
