WITH Autumn now with us, the fairways are appreciating the cooler conditions and the occasional drop of rain, so it is a good time to dust off the clubs and play some golf.
The ladies pennant season commences on March 28, so we are really getting into the serious golf season.
Saturday
THE 4BBB stableford event was played under sunny skies and with some fierce competition.
The highlight of the day occurred on the par three 13th, where Barry Elvery achieved every golfer’s dream, holing out in one.
I was told that for once Barry was lost for words, and no he didn’t use his driver, it was a lovely eight iron shot.
Thanks to this magnificent hole, Elvery and Graeme Torney took out the winner’s trophy with 47 points.
In a five-way countback, George Donaldson and Stewart Turner edged out Barry Oldaker and Phil Kosch for second place with 43 points.
Nearest the pins went to Mark Miller on the second, Donaldson on the third and fifth, Torney on the eighth, David Rendell on the 11th and Elvery on the 15th.
Longest putt on the first and 16th was claimed by Bruce Taylor, and Oldaker claimed the 17th.
Longest and straightest drive on the ninth was awarded to Rendell.
Birdies and Ferrets went to Miller.
Friday
THE nine-hole stableford event belonged to the men, with no ladies featuring in the winning circle.
Played over the front nine, Oldaker ran out the winner with 21 points.
Allan Hitchcock grabbed second position with 18 points, four shots clear of third-placed Miller.
Wednesday
IT was an all-male event for the 13-hole stableford, which resulted in a closely contested finish, with a three-way countback.
The winner was Bernie Cook with 25 points, edging out George Donaldson and Stewart Turner.
Nearest the pins went to Turner on the second and Donaldson claimed the honours on the fifth and 13th.
Alex Walter claimed the longest putt prize.
Monday
ON fairways, now showing a green tinge, the ladies played a par event in pleasant conditions.
Irene Box was the winner with +2, ahead of Heather Wilkinson with +1 on a countback from Marie Cook.
Nearest the pins went to Tobi Salter on the 13th and 15th.
Longest putt on the 17th went to Wilkinson and Mary McCallum impressed on the 18th.
Wilkinson claimed the Birdies and Ferrets award and Marie the longest, straightest drive on the ninth.
This week
GOLF will be played on Wednesday and Friday, with the main event on Saturday being a stableford round.
