Locals impress during WDGA women's country week outing

FOUR HAMILTON local golfers, along with players from Heywood and Portland, represented the Western District Golf Association (WDGA) at last week’s country team’s tournament, with the men’s team claiming victory in division three, while the women came runner-up in division two.

Local representatives, Molly O’Brien, Sue Walter, Alma Fonda and Kerryn Price all played well across the tournament and helped the side finish just behind a strong Ballarat team.

The WDGA encompasses 24 separate golf clubs, including Hamilton, Portland and Heywood, and reaching as far north as Balmoral and as far east as Camperdown.

The women’s team fell just short of promotion to division one, as they had to settle for second place in their six-team division, falling just half a point shy of eventual winners Ballarat.

The tournament is held across several days, with teams travelling from as far as Portland to Mildura to Bairnsdale to Gippsland to play.

The men’s team went up against a pool of teams featuring Dalhousie District Golf Association, Wimmera District Golf Association and Victorian Golf League, going undefeated through the three matches across two days.

The victory will see them promoted to division two for next year’s competition.
