Bunker shots

A FIELD of 47 men and 18 women participated in last Saturday’s stroke event. 

The men were playing for the October Monthly Medal and George McLean had a very handy round to claim the medal, finishing with 86 (17) 69 nett, also topping the B grade ranks.

A grade winner was Tim Lloyd with 73 nett on a countback from Kynan Caruana, with Walter Bell taking third spot on a countback with 74 nett.

B grade runner-up was Shannon Kearns on a countback from Stephen Astbury after both finished with 71 nett.

Ball run down in A grade went to Ben Kelson 74 nett, Chris Crane 75 nett and Jim King 76 nett.

Ball run down in B grade went to Matt Hill 71 nett, Glenn Hards 72 nett and John Andrews 73 nett.

Nearest the pin on third hole went to Cameron McDonald, the sixth was won by Chris Barry, Mark Williams took out the 13th and Nathan Caruana claimed the 16th hole.

The closest second shot on the ninth was won by Stuart McAdam, while David Williams impressed on the 15th.

The women’s competition was won by Robyn Holcombe on a countback from Michelle Walkley, after both carded 77 nett. 

Ball run down went to Margie Hadley and Gerri Griffin, both 78 nett, Sue Walter 79 nett, along with Jenny Fishburn and Wendy Wathen 80 nett.

Nearest the pin on third hole went to Walter, the sixth hole went to Holcombe, while Alma Fonda took both the honours on the 13th and 16th holes.

Tania Cullinane was closest on her second shot on the 15th hole.

Wednesday

THE women hosted their annual Pink Day, which was a fundraiser for Western District Health Service Cancer Centre.

Eighty-one ladies participated in the 4BBB event, with players coming from Port Fairy, Stawell, Horsham, Heywood, Warrnambool, Willaura, Balmoral, Lake Bolac, Grampians, Parklands, Toolondo and Terang.

Winners on the day were Val Linke and Jo Brown with 47 points, second place went to Judith Salter and Heather Wilkinson with 46, while third place went to Anne Ryan and Gerri Griffin with 44 on a countback from fourth placegetters, Jenny Crawford and Jen Hutton.

Nearest the pins went to Pauline Penning on the third hole, Kavell Lyons on the sixth, Glen Dixon on the 13th, and Carolyn Lewis on the 16th.

The longest putt on 18th was won by Jenny Crawford, while Marion Venn took out the nearest to the string on the fifth hole for 0-24 handicappers, with the 25-45 handicapped going to Carolyn Lewis.

Next Wednesday the women will be playing par and it is also the third round of the RA Christie Trophy.

Twilight

WEDNESDAY twilight had 24 players participating with Stephen Astbury returning the best score, 21 points, ahead of McLean one shot further back.

 Three players finished on 19 – Chris Crane, Ross Murray and Jon Manson.

Tuesday

THE beginners and emerging golfers had nine players in their competition this week, with Helen Dillon providing the best score of the day with 21 points, closely followed by Alan McLaughlan 19 and Jan Hornell 18.

Upcoming events

WESTERN District Health Service (WDHS) is holding its annual four-person ambrose event on November 17, entries through community liaison department at WDHS.

Hamilton Golf Club will host its annual tournament from November 23-26, and entries are now being taken.

Out on the course it is time for the spring greens renovation with the greens being cored.

The course staff would like some assistance in cleaning up cores off the greens tomorrow.

The greens will be cored starting from 8.30am until 1.30pm.

The club is hoping to have at least 20 members helping on Sunday, just turn up in the morning for a couple of hours.

Today’s event for the men is the second round of the Rountree Hyslop Cup which is a 4BBB par event, while the women will be playing individual stableford.

Hit them long and straight and enjoy the 19th hole.
