Cole takes out women’s club championship

THE Heywood Golf Club has crowned a new women’s club champion, with Sharon Cole taking out top honours at last week’s tournament.

Cole ousted eventual runner-up Deb McLeod by four shots in what was an incredibly tight battle, with Cole saying it was so close they weren’t even sure who had won when they finished the last hole.

“It was very close, at one stage there was one point between three of us,” she said.

“I was able to get away to a two-shot lead later on and I guess I was just able to hold my nerve for a little bit longer.

“We kind of kept pace over the last three holes, I ended up four shots up by the end of it, it was a very exciting finish.”

After 11 years of playing golf at Heywood, this is Cole’s first ever A grade club championship victory, and she said it is certainly her biggest achievement since she took up the sport.

“I’ve played in a few other events here and there, I’ve won a B grade championship here a couple of times but never an A grade one which I suppose makes this one even more special,” she said.

Cole said while she doesn’t often play courses other than Heywood, where she plays at least once per week, she has been ticking off her goal of playing 100 different golf courses slowly but surely.

“I’m up to about 59 at this point, I’ve played over in Queensland, South Australia and up in the northern parts of Victoria near the Murray (River),” she said.

“My next golfing trip will actually be returning to Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, my uncle is a member there and I played there last year, he says I need to make it an annual event so I’m heading over there in May for that.”

• The women’s B grade championship saw Coral Stephens get over the line by the narrowest of margins, as she was able to get over the line against runner-up Ro Menzel by just one shot.
