Parklander Candour

A BLUSH of green now colours the fairways following a small amount of rain and some dewy mornings, nonetheless we certainly need more rain to promote growth and soften the ground.

Parklands is trialling a new golf format for Wednesday golf events for the next month from May 8.

This will consist of two nine-hole stableford competitions, the morning event hitting off at 9.30am and the afternoon event hitting off at 1pm.

Players are welcome to participate in one or both events.

Saturday

A PERFECT autumn day greeted the players to contest the May Monthly Medal, which was played as a stroke event over 18 holes.

With run still in play and the scrapes in excellent condition, there were no excuses to be had, and an excellent field rolled up with round one of the championships also in contention.

Stewart Turner took out a comfortable win in the Monthly Medal with an exceptional 89-28-61.

The voucher winner was Allan Flavell with nett 67 from Bernie Cook on a nett 68.

Balls down the line went to Peter Irvin and Vince O’Brien both on nett 69, from Barry Oldaker on nett 70.

After round one of the championships, James Brown leads the scratch with 74 and Turner leads the handicap.

Nearest the pins went to Irvin on the second, Oldaker on the third, Andrew Coyne on the fifth, Turner on the seventh and 11th, and Alex Walter on the 13th.

Coyne had the longest putt on the first, Bruce Taylor on the 16th and John Wilkinson on the 18th.

The Birdies and ferrets was won by David Moller.

Longest, straightest drive on the ninth went to Ron Oakley.

Friday

A GOOD number of players ventured out in extremely pleasant conditions to play a stroke round over the original nine holes.

The winner was Wilkinson with an impressive nett 28.5, from Barry Oldaker and Russell Murphy after both finished with nett 32.

Nearest the pin on the second was Les Pye and the 13th went to Murphy.

Longest putt on the first went to Oldaker, who also won birdies and ferrets.

Wednesday

THE usual suspects featured for the Wednesday stableford event played over the inward nine plus holes one, two and nine.

Bringing in the winning score was Oldaker with 29 points ahead of Mark Miller with 28 points on a countback from Flavell.

Nearest the pin on the second was Oldaker, the 13th went to Flavell and the 15th to Taylor.

Walter again holed the longest putt and Oldaker won the birdies and ferrets.

Tuesday

ON a cool day that featured a lazy wind, a reasonable number of players enjoyed a three-person Irish stableford event.

The winning trio consisted of Gaye Goggin, Marg Donehue and Gina Kelly, with an excellent score of 94 points from Heather Hay, Mary McCallum and Monica Kealy on 88 points.

Nearest the pins were awarded to Irene Box on the second, Kealy on the fifth, Hay on the seventh, and the 15th went to Toby Salter.

Sue Irvin holed the longest putt on the first, Box on the 17th and Salter on the 18th.

Monica Kealy was drawn out for birdies and ferrets.

Please note the club championships commence on May 14, as per the fixture book.

This week

GOLF will be played on Friday, Saturday, and Wednesday.

The Saturday event will be the Macarthur Challenge, to be played at Parklands with hit off at 12.30pm.
