Portland searches for division one glory

THE Portland Golf Club is preparing to host the Western District Golf Association pennant finals today and tomorrow, with the local division one side set to compete in the scratch grand final against Warrnambool.

The men’s and mixed finals will be played on Sunday, and in addition to the division one final, Portland will also battle it out in the division three scratch decider against Grampians.

Portland division one vice-captain Julian Gollasch said his side is raring to go as they look to assert their formidability once again in the WDGA.

“We won division one three years ago but had a really disappointing year two seasons ago and ended up getting relegated to division two which as far as I’m aware had never happened to Portland before,” Gollasch said.

“We turned things around and were able to get promoted back up after last season and now we’re back in the div one final which is fantastic.

“We’ve got every reason to be confident, but from memory Warrnambool has won eight of the last 10 grand finals and they’re a very deep side who are more than capable of taking it out.”

Two champions have already been crowned, with Coleraine defeating Mooralla, 3-2, in the division two handicap, while the division one mixed final was won by Peterborough, 3-2, against Cobden.

The women will be in action tomorrow, with Port Fairy and Warrnambool battling for division one scratch honours, while Hamilton and Warrnambool will face-off in both division two and division two handicap finals, and Cobden and Port Fairy will contest the division four handicap final.

Matches will commence at 9.30am with the top divisions teeing off at 10.45am.
