Parklander candour

TRUE golfers are indeed a hardy or some may say a mad group of humans, as was proved over this last week.

Mother nature has thrown true spring weather our way, albeit a week early, with blustery winds, showers and at times driving rain, topping it up with an occasional burst of sunshine.

Nonetheless, events continued at Parklands with a core group of loyal golfers.

Saturday

WITH the wind gusting down the fairways and persistent showers, a two-person Gentsomes was played.

At times those out on the course really wondered about the merits of playing, as they were buffeted about.

Bringing in the win were husband and wife, John and Heather Wilkinson, with 43 stableford points on a countback from Terry Rhook and Graeme Torney.

Nearest the pin winners were Mark Miller on the fifth, Bruce Taylor the seventh and George Donaldson on the 13th.

Alex Walter sunk the longest putt on the first, Rhook on the 16th, John Wilkinson on the 17th and Allan Flavell on the 18th.

Birdies and ferrets was won by Heather Wilkinson.

Friday

A SMALL field braved the conditions to play a stroke event over the original nine-hole course.

In a three-way countback, Taylor took out the win from Stewart Turner and Barry Oldaker after all three returned with nett 38.

Les Pye landed closest to the pin on the second and Bernie Cook on the 13th.

Birdies and ferrets went to Lee Petsch.

Wednesday

AGAIN, weather conditions challenged the players who took to the course for a 13-hole stableford event.

Taylor was the winner with 23 points on a countback from Bernie Cook.

Barry Oldaker came in third with 22 points on a countback from Pye and Donaldson.

Nearest the pin on the fifth was Cook and Taylor on the 13th.

The longest putt on the first went to Turner, while Cook won the birdies and ferrets.

Tuesday

THOSE that played a stroke event today were greeted by strong winds and cloudy conditions, however no rain.

The winner on the day was Jaymie Broad with an outstanding 83-17-66, holding off Irene Box 89-19-70 and Heather Wilkinson 106-31-75.

Nearest the pins were awarded to Jenny Row on the fifth, Gina Kelly on the seventh and Box on the 13th and the 15th.

The longest putt on the first went to Kelly, Gaye Goggin on the 17th and Row on the 18th.

The longest, straightest drive on the ninth was won by Broad, who also won the putting with 23 putts.

Birdies and ferrets went to Toby Salter.

This week

GOLF will be played, today, Friday, Saturday and Tuesday.

Saturday’s event is the Monthly Medal stroke competition, with all players welcome - noon for 12.30pm hit off.
