Sherlock, Porter take on netball role

THE Hamilton Kangaroos have unveiled co-netball directors for 2023 with Renae Porter and Bec Sherlock set to take the reins from Amanda Hicks.

The new pair have plenty of experience, combining for nearly 50 years worth of playing, coaching and administering.

The role will be split, and Porter said having two people to manage the role would be beneficial.

“We were both individually approached, and we both have referred basketball together, so it was probably a no-brainer when they said Bec was coming on board,” she said.

“The football side has done it well, building through the juniors, and we need to probably look at that going forward.”

Sherlock was excited to partner up with Porter and said it made the decision easier.

“Once I heard it was going to be a split role, it made it an easier decision,” she said.

“Amanda has done a great job this year recruitment wise and hopefully we can build on that next year.

“There is lots of talent in the juniors, they just need the opportunity.

“The girls have had some great results across the board this year, so hopefully we can progress on that.”

With the Kangaroos beginning their search for 2023 coaches, it will be a busy few months for Porter and Sherlock.

Hamilton Kangaroos Football Netball Club chairman, Lachy Patterson said the club was ecstatic to have the pair fill the role.

“We are extremely excited to have Renae and Bec commit to what is such an important role within our club,” he said.

“They are both individuals of the highest standing and we truly believe they make a valuable contribution to the Kangaroos.

“The netball director role is so important to the success of our netball program - working closely with the coaches, they set the path for how all of our teams play both in terms of game style and just as importantly, attitude.

“It is also such a big role now that having two quality people put their hands up is an opportunity we’re not prepared to let go.”

Building on the progression the Roos have made during the past few years is critical and Patterson is confident the momentum can continue into 2023.

“I’m sure the two of them will work really well together, sharing tasks and continuing the great work done by Amanda Hicks over the past four years,” he said.

“Renae and Bec have a great set of skills that will help us to improve our program and hopefully continue to attract great people to the club.

“It’s also lovely to have Renae, as a Kangaroos life member, back involved in an operational role and to see Bec around the club again after a year away while having another child.”
