PORTLAND’S division one and two netballers are the only sides remaining to represent the club with Hampden finals now upon us, with both teams in with a great chance of victory on the weekend.
The division one side will take on South Warrnambool on Sunday in a rare opportunity to play on home turf, with co-captain Casey Anson saying they’ve got a terrific opportunity ahead of them.
“We’re very excited to play some finals netball… we’re fortunate in div one to have a lot of finals experience around us,” Anson said.
“Jess (Cook) and Lauren (Hockley) in goals have been a pretty unstoppable duo, and Jacci (Piergrosse) in goal keeper has been a real strong addition with her height and strength.”
They’ll be coming up against a South Warrnambool opponent which they have had two close battles against so far, and which got the best of them by nine goals on the weekend.
Anson said the result of Saturday’s game hasn’t affected her team’s belief in their ability to get the job done, saying they’ll “take the game as it comes.”
“We’re hoping to be on the right side of it (on Sunday), we were with them for most of the game just kind of fell away a little bit,” she said.
“Playing at home is a huge advantage… the girls know the rings and I think knowing we’ll have our home fans behind us is going to be fantastic for the group.”
The division one game will start Sunday at midday.
Division two makes the trek
Tomorrow will see Portland’s division two netballers take on Hamilton Kangaroos, but they’ll have to make the trek all the way to Camperdown to do it.
The Tigers have been flying most of the season, coming within two points of finishing top of the ladder which would have meant a first-round bye.
Instead, they’ll have to go through a Kangaroos outfit in the qualifying final tomorrow which has managed to get the best of them in both of their clashes this season, including a one-goal margin on Anzac Day.
But with a line-up boasting a good mix of experience and youth, and led by co-captains Jenna Domburg and Janelle Lancaster, the Tigers will be confident of being able to get the job done.
