WITH just two weeks left of the South West District Netball League teams will be putting it all on the line tomorrow in the preliminary finals at Alexandra Park.
As one of the first major events to be held at the newly unveiled Alexandra Park pavilion there is plenty of hype surrounding tomorrow’s clashes.
In the A grade game, it is Dartmoor who will take on Cavendish in what is expected to be another thrilling finals match up.
So far in the A grade competition each final has been decided by less than 10 goals, with the Bloods and Giants qualifying final two weeks ago resulting in a one-goal win to Dartmoor.
Both sides have been demonstrating another level of play in the finals series with Dartmoor losing to Tyrendarra by just two goals in the second semi-final last week while Cavendish put their foot down in the final quarter against Coleraine to win by seven goals.
Cavendish coach Leanne Perry was happy with her sides performance on Sunday and will expect a big boost with the hope of Erin Kinnealy returning to the side after missing the elimination final last week.
“We’re nervous of course but we were really happy with our game on Sunday, so we’ll look to build on that again,” she said.
“They’re (Dartmoor) up and about so it’s just about getting out there and giving it a crack, making the most of our centre passes and treasuring the ball.
“Dartmoor has been a tough game all year, but things have been slowly coming together for us and I’ve really noticed a change in everyone towards the back half of the season.
“We’ve set minor goals and managed to tick them off, so we head into the game with a fifty, fifty chance and just go for it.”
The Giants have also hit their stride toward the end of the season with the reinjection of Holly Smith and Charlotte Rice providing versatility in their defence end alongside Keely Price and the option of Emily Pridham.
With plenty of defensive combinations the Giants will push to stem the influence of Cavendish attacking threats Marni Luhrs and Carly Behncke.
Dartmoor coach Leesa Logan said the side has the belief they can get the job done and execution on the day will be key.
“I’m so proud of the girls and everything they’ve been able to achieve so far,” she said.
“I think it’s just been about showing them that they can do it and believing in that, and I think they’re finally getting there.
“Saturday’s game was just fantastic, and they played so well so if they can bring a performance like that, we’ll feel confident we can win.”
The winner of tomorrow’s clash will take on Tyrendarra in the grand final.
The game is scheduled to begin at 2pm tomorrow.
Senior games
In the A reserve clash, it is Heywood who face a fired-up Cavendish team with both sides boasting plenty of experience in their line ups.
The Bloods will have high hopes for tomorrow’s game after leading against Westerns across the four quarters in the second semi-final last week, only to drop the lead in the final stages of the game to go down by one goal.
Despite the loss the side will take a lot out of their performance when they face Heywood.
The Lions have come from a fourth-place finish on the ladder to make the preliminary final tomorrow and with the boost of Beth Wilson in the goal circle they will have plenty of combination options to combat the Bloods.
In B grade it will be a hard-hitting match up between Heywood and Coleraine.
The last time these two sides met was in the qualifying final two weeks ago where the Lions secured a thrilling one-goal victory.
Bernadette Hoare will be a key to Heywood’s success with her defensive work a huge asset to the Lions against an experienced Coleraine shooting circle.
In C grade Westerns come up against Cavendish with the Roos on the hunt for an improved performance from last week.
The Bloods head into the match as underdogs but have proven they can deliver a winning game under finals pressure.
Junior games
In the 17-and-under final Heathmere and Coleraine go head-to-head in a bit to make one last game in the grand final.
The Meres recorded a tough three-goal win against Heywood last week, 33-30 in the first semi-final with Coleraine dropping their match to Branxholme-Wallacedale.
Both sides have some firepower in their line ups with Tigrha Cleary dominating defensively for the Meres while Neve McClure has been an important attacking option for the Maroons.
In the 15-and-under game Westerns take on Coleraine to fight for a spot in the grand final against Cavendish.
The Roos are coming off a thrilling second semi-final where they performed strongly against Cavendish but went down in overtime.
While they have fought out a tough match, Coleraine will work to leave nothing on court with a big job for defenders coming up against the tall shooting option of Sienna Stone.
The 13-and-under game is contested between Dartmoor and Coleraine with the Giants going into the clash as favourites while the Maroons have shown strong form in finals and will match up well against their opponents.
