Giants, Darras fight for premiership title

THE South West District Football Netball League has hit the finale of its 2023 season with teams set to battle it out on the big stage at Hanlon Park tomorrow.

Across the junior and senior football and netball and Greater South West Junior Football League all eight clubs are represented across the finals series with some riveting match ups ready to play out.

After starting the season with the goal of just making finals, both A grade netball teams have surpassed their own expectations and will now go head-to-head tomorrow with Dartmoor and Tyrendarra set to compete for the premiership trophy.

The game is expected to be a hard hitting contest as their qualifying final matchup went down to the wire, with the Darras securing just a two-goal win.

The Giants are no strangers to close games with all of their regular time finals games being decided by two goals or less, before last week saw a 48-all finish in the 60 minutes send them into extra time against Cavendish.

Both sides have plenty of depth throughout their ranks with the Giants led by captain Rebecca Vankalken through the midcourt while their shooting combination has lifted across the course of the season with Marlee Gartlan and Mikayla Rice stepping up.

Tyrendarra’s line up is bookended with tall shooting threats of Eliza Alexander and Hannah Van Gemst while the defensive combinations of Andrea Smith, Matilda Hutchison and Ella Smith have provided ample options.

Giants coach Leesa Logan said she expects a strong display come tomorrow’s game and her side is simply elated to be there.

“We’re very excited and honestly so relieved to be there, (Saturday) was such a pressure cooker and we’re just really relieved,” she said.

“Whatever happens, happens. We made it and now it’s a matter of may the best team win on the day.

“We’ve only got Bec and Holly (Smith) remaining from last year’s team, so the girls have done fantastic and we were talking about the start of the season when I called Holly and said I’m not sure we’re going to have an A grade team this year.

“So, it was great that the A reserve girls have stepped up and then there is the inclusion of the Rice girls, so it’s a really proud coach moment to go we weren’t even sure we’d have a team to now being wow we’re in the grand final.

“I think we’ve shown that we can step up in finals and it was obviously a close game two weeks ago so it should be a good match.”

Reigning premiers Tyrendarra were in a similar situation with three of their premiership-winning team from 2022 returning in 2023.

“It’s been a bit of a season of surprises for us so far,” co-coach Hannah Van Gemst said.

“I think after last year we weren’t sure exactly what the team would look like, we knew we had depth in A reserve and that’s shown so far and then also some really strong inclusions – but you’ve got to make it all come together which has been a big focus during the season.

“We know Dartmoor are a really strong side and they play out every ball until the final whistle so it’s about us coming with our own intensity and hunger for the ball.

“Every single player has worked so hard this year to be where we are, but when it comes down to it, anything can happen on the day so we want to enjoy the moment, play as hard as we can and see what happens.”

Tomorrow’s A grade match is scheduled to begin at 2.30pm.
