Tempo the key on court

THE Hamilton Kangaroos will host South Warrnambool in Hampden Football Netball League (HFNL) Open netball action at Hawkesdale Recreation Reserve this afternoon.

The Roos are going into the round three clash with a full squad available after missing half the squad last week, in what will be a tough test for the young side.

“We have got everyone in for the game, it will be good to have everything together,” coach, Emma Sommerville said.

“It would have been great to have the full side in last week to have a run before we faced South as preparation.

“We are just trying to break it down and focus on smaller things for the game.”

Saskia Gould is coming off a 28-goal effort last week and will enjoy having the experience of Claire Crawford back in the attacking end at different times.

“Having a player like Sas coming up from 15s is very impressive,” Sommerville said.

“It sounded like she did really step up.

“We will definitely be using that rolling sub, it will be really beneficial for us during the season with so many juniors.

“I think for our goaling end, rotating through Claire, Sas and Ella will be important.”

Working through how often to rotate is taking some getting used to though, with the new rule implemented for this season.

“It is definitely tricky, you can very easily overdo it and do it too much, so finding that balance can be a bit tricky,” Sommerville said.

“We want to give people time to settle into the game as well.”

With the Roosters claiming the past two Open premierships, former Kangaroo, Hollie Phillips, has been an integral part and Sommerville is conscious of trying to interrupt South Warrnambool’s transition.

“We just want to focus on Hollie in shooter and if that ball comes in too quick from the centre pass, so focusing on slowing it down before it gets in there will be important,” Sommerville said.

“Their pressure across the court is really good, we do have a young team and just getting them to steady.

“The more we can slow it down, the better.”
