Double cup delight

THE Hamilton Harness Racing Club is gearing up for its biggest day of the year with Sunday’s cup day shaping up nicely.

The 10-race program includes the $35,000 Hamilton Pacing Cup and the $20,000 Hamilton Trotters Cup as the two feature races.

Club manager, David Johnson said he expected it to be another good day of racing and entertainment.

“The grounds are looking in excellent shape, as far as the racing goes, the track is in good order and we have 10 races on the schedule,” he said.

“We have really good fields, and it should be good entertainment for everyone.

“Depending on the weather, Sunday is supposed to be 27 degrees, we don’t know if the track will be fast enough to break records, but it will be up there I think.

“I don’t think there are any real favourites standing out at the moment, so it should be really high-quality racing.”

Good numbers across all races mean the quality will be on show throughout the day.

Johnson said trainers and drivers were travelling from far and wide to Hamilton’s biggest harness racing day of the year.

“We have had good nominations, we have got good support from South Australia and from metropolitan, as well as some locals,” he said.

There has also been some changes made to this year’s event, including restrictions to ensure it is COVIDsafe.

“We have made it free entry this year, but everyone has got to be double vaccinated,” he said.

“There has been quite a bit of enquiry on the day and I am expecting a good crowd.

“It has been very difficult to book entertainment, we have a DJ, jumping castle and hopefully we will have a betting club and we have got two food vans along with our own catering as well.”

Umbrellas will be set up along the lawn and spectators are encouraged to bring their own chairs as well.

It is set to be a fun day with plenty of action both on and off the track.
