Elvison rocks another win at Casterton

FREE-rolling steeplechaser, Elvison, led all-the-way to complete back-to-back feature jumps race victories at Casterton on Sunday.

After a demolition job in winning the $100,000 Two Rivers Steeplechase last month, the Symon Wilde trained eight-year-old held off some stiff opposition in recording a memorable win in the $50,000 WC & AC Miller Steeplechase over 3800 metres.

With gun hoop, Aaron Kuru, again in the saddle, the pair quickly took up their normal front-runners’ role.

The task of carrying 6.5 kilograms more than his last win was made even harder with plenty of pressure coming at different stages of the race.

Former New Zealander Te Kahu eyeballed him at different stages during the first lap, before Historic ramped up the revs in the final lap through the open country.

Kuru was able to keep Elvison composed and kicked clear through the gap before holding off Mapping, who ran home well to be beaten less than two lengths.

Te Kahu kept plugging away for third, beaten 12 lengths, while Mapping was fourth, almost 60 lengths from the winner.

Starting $1.60 favourite, the win was his third around the spectacular chase course.

Richard O’Donoghue continued his good recent record at the track by winning both hurdle races.

Onset, who he partnered when winning on cup day, was a strong winner of the Davis Blinds BM120 Hurdle, while first-season jumper, Gravistas, won the Ecycle Maiden Hurdle.

Winning trainers were Eric Musgrove and Mick Nolan, respectively.

Brothers, Darryl and Lee Horner fought out the finish of the bet365 0-58 Highweight Handicap before confirmation of the win was given in steward’s room after the race.

Darryl held the race on Mr Pocket, but not before withstanding a protest from Lee on Fast Foils.

A short-half head separated them at the finish.

Sea Princess franked her recent consistent form with an easy win in the Axis Cleaning Services 0-58 Handicap thanks to a lovely ride by Melissa Julius.

Sitting just off the pace, Julius eased the mare through a gap on straightening to charge away and record a four-length win.

Craiglea Blizzard provided a nice family win for Wayne and Kate Walters in the Finns Fine Foods 0-58 Handicap, while Christine Puls continued her good recent form in the saddle with an easy win on the Paul Preusker trained Beetwentynine.

Jumps racing returns to Casterton on 24 July.
