Race ready

DESPITE about 200mm falling since the start of October, the Penshurst Cup will give locals a chance to get to a major race meet again.

Following the cancellation of the Dunkeld Cup last week, the Penshurst Racing Club remains confident a full program of races will proceed.

Club secretary, Brendan Kelly said the club had prepared well in advance for tomorrow's meet.

“We have been in the lap of the Gods with the weather, there has been some doubt but we have taken it as we were always going to race and just keep preparing for the day,” he said.

“In October we had 160-170mm then in the last week we have had another 33mm, the surrounds will be soft, but they will be ok.

“The track always holds up pretty well, it has a free-draining base and so it always comes up, but with the amount of rain we’ve had, can’t help but the surrounds to be a little wet.”

Racing Victoria stewards visited the track on Wednesday and the current rating of Soft6 could even improve before raceday.

Ticket sales are also looking reasonable, but Kelly is expecting plenty of walk-ups on the day.

“I think people are a bit nervous about the weather,” he said.

“We haven’t sold a lot of pre-bookings, our marquee and umbrella pre-bookings are good and on par with normal, member ticket sales are good, but I think people will make the decision on the day.”

A bus will run from Hamilton on the day and can be booked online.
