THE Hamilton Racing Club held another successful Party With The Ponies meeting on Tuesday, including plenty of off-field activities to help recognize International Day of People with Disability, which complimented some fantastic racing on the track.
Despite plenty of race morning scratchings, possibly due to the preceding rain in the days leading up to meeting, the track raced beautifully in the low slow range.
Results were spread evenly among trainers, while Dean Yendall led the way in the jockey ranks with a double.
With a little more luck, that figure could have been greater with three placings as well.
His winners on two short-priced favourites came from contrasting rides, highlighting why he is such a successful rider.
Actaeon for trainer, Symon Wilde, was sent to the front and led all the way for an easy win in the Leo Roberts and Ruth Margaret Anne Memorial over 1400m.
Two races later Ferlazzo settled in a position just off the pace, before descending late to win the Walkers Earthworks BM58 Handicap over 1600m for dynamic training combination of Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr.
The best ride of the day was in the final race when Fred Kerlsey weaved his way through the field to land Power Missile a narrow winner in the Bet365 BM58 Handicap over 1400m for Warrnambool trainer, Lindsey Smith.
Back at the tail of the field and on the fence at the 400m mark, things looked grim until he found a way inside horses to launch late on the well-supported four-year-old gelding.
The day also realized two longshot results with Mystery Deel and Sunburnt winning at $21 and $17 respectively.
Mystery Deel held off all challengers for apprentice rider, Sarah Field, in the ACE Radio Maiden Plate over 1600m, while Sunburnt showed her love of the Hamilton track when winning the KINVONVIE BM58 Handicap over 1200m with Rhys McLeod in the saddle.
From six starts at the track, the Bill Cerchi-trained six-year-old mare has now recorded two wins and four placings.
The best finish of the day came in the Hamilton Turf To Trots Jan 12 & 14 BM58 Handicap with only inches separating the first three horses at the post after 2200m.
Madison Lloyd dictated the race on the Matt Cumani-trained Know Matters What, kicking clear on the home turn before narrowly holding out the Symon Wilde pair, Jack Knows Best and Kodiak Bear.
The meeting commenced with Ballarat trainers taking out both maiden races.
Seacryption for Mitch Freedman won the Bet365 3YO Maiden Plate over 1200m in a driving finish, followed by the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace juggernaut winning with Diamond Witness in the Party with The Ponies Maiden Plate over 1100m.
Local trainers, Matt and Louise Cooper, continued the stable’s good recent form with longshot, Somaurum, holding on well for third after leading in the race won by Diamond Witness.
