DR Dependable upstaged the main chances in the $60,000 Great Western Steeplechase to provide former Irish jockey, Cillin Leonard, his first win on Australian soil.
The Eric Musgrove-trained outsider finished strongly to defeat race favourite, Mighty Oasis, in a stirring finish.
It was a fantastic edition of the iconic race with any of three horses a chance of winning after the last jump.
Mighty Oasis was looking to hold out Historic, who was trying to take an inside run entering the home straight, with Dr Dependable stalking both.
Aquileon who had raced among the leaders for most of the race had started to drop off.
Peeling off their backs, Dr Dependable swooped late to record his second career jumps victory.
After being a constant of the jumps scene for the past three seasons, it was a much-deserved win for horse and connections.
His other success was also at the track when winning his Maiden hurdle in 2022.
Leonard - who is competing in his first full season in Australia - was clearly buoyed by his first win following a handful of placings from 30 odd rides.
On a day when all four odds-on favourites tasted defeat over the jumps, it was Texas Hold’em and Maatsuyker who also showed a liking for Casterton with wins in their respective races.
Opening a great day of racing, it was Alibey at his hurdle debut that provided race-caller and owner, Rick McIntosh, a big thrill when winning the Bartons Waste Maiden Hurdle.
Hoodys Horse proved to be a popular winner for local trainer, Trudy Cottier, demolishing his rivals in the Josh Lewis Accounting 0-58 Highweight Handicap over 1800m.
The rise in trip was no obstacle, Daniel Small controlling the race from start to finish for an easy four-length win.
Another local combination in Charlotte Parker and State Of Maine had to settle for second once again, but both should be rewarded when they step out in a similar race soon.
Trainer, Symon Wilde, may have missed out over the jumps, but he did train a double on the flat.
He combined with Aaron Kuru winning with Darts Daly and Golden Garden.
Kuru with a treble, also won on Maatsuyker in the Adam Lindsay Gorden Hurdle for trainer, Tom Dabernig.
