MULTIPLE country cups winner, Picaroon, looks set to add the $60,000 Hamilton Cup to her resume in what shapes to be a fantastic day’s racing for the club today.
A narrow loss in the Murtoa Cup last weekend should have the Tom Dabernig-trained mare ready to add to a year that already has the Casterton and Apsley Cups in her keeping.
Interestingly, she follows a similar seven-day back-up from Murtoa when winning easily over 1600m at this meeting last year.
At her third run from a brief let-up, she looks primed to strike.
Regular rider, Tom Madden, should be able to stalk the speed and flow into the race in the home straight from barrier four.
Her main dangers look to be Commander Harry and Lottaroc.
Commander Harry, trained by Ciaron Maher, has been contesting city races all preparation and while not winning has been around the placings.
The perceived drop back in class will suit and with the Maher polish, the six-year-old should figure in the finish.
Lottaroc has a similar city form pattern, including a last start Morphettville win to cap a consistent run of form.
Fresh off a Coleraine Cup win on Spare Coin, Paul Gatt, will be keen to make it a winning combination with trainer David Noonan.
The ACE Radio BM70 Handicap over 1100m has assembled a terrific field of sprinters.
Exposed form mixed with first-up runners makes it a tricky race for punters, but a great race in anticipation.
Grassmere Jewel, trained by Adam Chambers, a winner of five of her 10 career starts has an excellent track record of three wins from three starts.
Today is her biggest test, but her chances look strong based on her first-up effort when lumping 65.5kg at this track last month.
She drops 4kg, albeit in a stronger race, but from barrier two, Madden should have her in a nice trailing position throughout.
Port Louis, along with Tom Dabernig pair, Call To Glory and Thisismyturf also bring winning form to the race, but the mystery lies with the runners who are first-up.
Mawallock won this race last year, but two unplaced runs since have seen her spend most of her time in the paddock.
She had a boom on her with four wins from five starts at that stage.
From barrier one, the Lindsey Smith-trained mare only needs to reproduce that form to figure in the finish.
Smith also has Head’em first-up, although barrier 12 may test him.
The Mark O’Donnell-trained Prince Sonic has also trialled well for his return to racing.
Atlantic Spirit, trained by Tom Conlan, also put three wins together last preparation.
One down in the weights who may sit back while the fireworks unfold up front is King Neptune.
He looks a little below some others in class, but at nice each-way odds could be worth a ticket.
The Midfield Meats 3YO Maiden Plate looks like an interesting race to open the day’s racing.
Plenty of unknown with six first starters makes betting trends the best guide.
From a local angle, Americain Miss and Somaurum represent trainers, Kaye Edwards, along with Matt and Louise Cooper, respectively.
Americain Miss has been very consistent including a last start second at Coleraine, while Somaurum who has a track placing and first-up form hits the track after three months off the scene.
