Lawn Green challenges top contenders

LAWN Purple has maintained its top spot on the Surry District Tennis Association A grade ladder after earning a close 3-39 to 3-35 win despite a thrilling performance from Lawn Green on Saturday.

Fifth-place Lawn Green put up a strong fight against a dominant Lawn Purple outfit with the inclusion of Damian Kielbaska for Lawn Green winning 25 games and each of his sets.

Lawn Green put their foot down early, with Kielbaska and Andrew Reeves recording an 8-2 win against the experienced duo of Craig Keenan and Peter Rayner.

Lawn Purple’s reliable women’s duo of Kerri-Ann O’Keefe and Leah Sandeman continued their impressive season with an 8-1 set victory against Lawn Green’s Beck Hoppe and Maddie Wyllie.

The mixed doubles match ups closed the gap on the scoreboard with Kielbaska and Hoppe earning a win against Rayner and O’Keefe before Keenan and Sandeman hit back for Lawn Purple defeating Reeves and Wyllie, 8-4.

The fifth set was a thriller with Kielbaska and Wyllie holding out a tough Rayner and Sandeman combination, 9-8, to secure three sets.

The match came down to the final set with O’Keefe and Keenan managing to get on top with enough games to claim the set and match win for Lawn Purple.

• It was a tough hit out in the A grade match between Heywood Lions and Lawn Yellow, with Lawn Yellow coming out in full force to earn a 6-48 to 0-10 win.

Lawn were firing early in the clash, dropping no more than two games in each set across Saturday.

•It was another big win in the third A grade match up with Lawn Red defeating Heywood Roses, 6-48 to 0-10.

The injection of Aiden Mibus in the Lawn Red line up paid dividends with the side making the most of their experience against a young Heywood outfit.

• No games will be played on Saturday due to an association-wide bye, with play resuming for all grades on February 3.
