TESTS on form one students at all Hamilton secondary schools have revealed that a significant proportion of those tested suffer from serious reading disabilities. A report on the tests, released by the Hamilton Education Committee’s learning difficulties sub-committee, shows that almost one quarter of the students tested were under-achieving in reading. The committee has recommended the establishment of a psychology and guidance sub-branch, a speech therapy clinic, a remedial centre and evening or Saturday morning classes in Hamilton in an attempt to remedy the problem. The Hamilton Education Committee, an organisation representative of schools, parent groups, businesses, professionals and service organisations, set up the sub-committee to conduct a survey of children with learning difficulties in the Hamilton area.
